Schylan: Young Wonder
Unique, Raspy & soulful with a voice that captivates you is what you think of when you envision Canada’s talent spectrum, Schylan. The young, powerhouse talent of Jamaican descent is ready to take the entertainment universe by storm with her strong, infectious vocals and vibrant island flavor.
The 16 year old singer/songwriter’s love for music was birthed in the womb, as her mother, Karen Samuels, used to play music to Schylan while she was pregnant in order to foster a musical child. Her mother’s wishes came true. At an early age, Schylan started performing at local events which garnished her much deserved attention and praise. She took part in every school play and dance; from rapping, dancing and acting Schylan showed she could do it.
As she got older, Schylan studied different types of genres of music which first lead her to rapping. Rapping seemed to express the fun side of her, however, when Schylan began to sing everything else just came into place. Her influences include Beyonce, Monica, Keyshia Cole, Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys, and Nikki Minaj. She spends most of her time singing and writing music.
Just last year, she was introduced to Canadian producer, Jordan, who led her into the studio to complete her demo. Her talent shines on tracks like “Lost” and “Reminisce” while expressing her love for the old school with her modern take on Phil Collins hit, “The Air”.
Destiny wasn’t always so clear for the young wonder. She was raised in Toronto by a single mother who often worked as many as three jobs at a time to provide for the family. Schylan witnessed her mother’s hard work and endurance, which gave her the will to win and the confidence to walk firmly in her musical journey.
What’s next for this outgoing, articulate young talent? In addition to music, Schylan is organizing a charity to help fuel a local breakfast program and on June 25th, is filming an episode of Canada’s Party Mama ,which is to be aired in January in celebration of her sweet 16! Music, movies and more, the future is bright and the world is ready for Schylan! As Schylan would say “Let’s Get Em!”
